Homelessness has become a major problem in the United States in recent years. Yet while awareness of the causes of homelessness is growing, the nature of the issue is still not well understood.

For example, many don’t realize that up to 20% of homeless people suffer from both substance addiction and severe mental illness.

This combination of two problems is known as dual-diagnosis. Few people understand how difficult it is to treat dual-diagnosed people without treating both their addictions and mental illnesses simultaneously.
